R/C Engine Workshop

bullet  To set the "low end" on an air bleed carb, first screw out the adjustment screw 2 or 3 turns. Second, take a small sewing needle and insert the needle into hole in the carb body in front of the motor.  Third, slowly and gently screw in the adjustment screw until it just touches the needle.  Your done!
bullet  Does your engine run for a few seconds and quit? Especially when you takeoff? Check your fuel and pressure lines, they may be reversed!
bullet  Does your engine quit as soon as you advance the throttle for take off? You've already been through the too lean or too rich drill?  If the plumbing is OK then try changing glow plugs.
bullet  Does your engine quit as soon as your plane leaves the ground?  The engine is probably too lean, but open the low end 1/4 turn.  But before you attempt another takeoff, start the engine and hold the plane straight up and at full throttle. Runs fine, fly, slows down, still to lean, open the needle valve 2 clicks.  Repeat until the engine actual speeds up just a little when you hold the nose up.
bullet Is your engine running backwards? Briefly hold your finger over the exhaust port on the muffler.  The engine will slow down, almost quit, (remove your finger), and the engine will begin running forward.
bullet  Use a glow lighter equipped with a meter that shows if the glow plug is working!
bullet  Does your two stroke keep throwing the prop?  Check for a flooded engine. Remove the glow plug, cover the top of the engine with a rag or your hand and spin the prop with your starter. Replace the glow plug and start as usual.
bullet  Seal air leaks with Copper Hi-Temp Permatex. Apply with a toothpick...remember "a little dab will do ya".
bullet  Using lighter fluid to start your engine in cold weather? Put a little after run oil in the lighter fluid container.  It will help reduce wear on your engine, since there is no lubrication in lighter fluid.
bullet  Moving from a three to a two bladed propeller? Check the size and pitch of the original propeller, add 1" to the length and 2 to the pitch of the proposed replacement prop. A 10X6 three blade = 11X8 2 blade)
bullet Engine running lean no matter how much you open the needle valve? Check the fuel lines for kinks, first.  Then remove all fuel lines from the engine and attach an extra piece of fuel tubing to the needle valve inlet. Either hit with a blast of compressed air or blow into the tube. More than likely there's debris in the needle valve seat. (If this doesn't have any effect, then the fuel tank needs to be removed and checked for blockage).
