Takeoff Clinic
Tricycle Gear or Nose Gear
 |
To take off, find a target at
the end of the runway,
give just enough throttle to get the
plane rolling towards your target, then advance the throttle smoothly to FULL throttle.
|
 |
After takeoff keep your climb
rate fairly shallow. Engine failure
after takeoff and
while in a steep climb is a recipe for disaster!
|
 |
When taking off in taller grass
with a tricycle gear plane, hold
up elevator
to reduce drag on the nose gear. Once your plane
leaves the
ground
neutralize your elevator quickly so the
aircraft flying level
just above the
grass.
As the plane gains airspeed, start the climb out.
Pay attention
with this
technique because the plane will "jump off the ground".
This is not for beginning students.
|
 |
Does your trainer keep pulling
right or left during take off? Be sure that
your
main landing gear is aligned properly. The main wheels
should
be almost parallel with
each other. Preferably, angled in toward the
front of the plane,
just slightly. (toe-in). Also insure that your nose wheel
strut is tight, and the wheel points straight
ahead.
|
 |
Roll your trainer on a level,
smooth surface, adjust gear until in rolls
straight.
(Adjust the nose wheel alignment at the servo link inside the
airplane)
|
 |
Don't forget the rudder needs to be
straight after all the nose wheel adjustments. |
Take Offs for Tail Draggers
Because tail draggers don't have a steerable nose gear, these
planes
require a few different techniques to get off the ground.
 |
First things First!
When taxiing, always hold FULL UP elevator.
|
 |
Find a target at
the end of the runway,
give just enough throttle to get the
plane rolling towards your target, then advance the throttle smoothly to
FULL throttle.
|
 |
Start your take off roll
with full up elevator, as the speed increases
slowly release the hold on the elevator. By the way, it's better to
slowly release the elevator early as opposed to latter.
|
 |
If you have a computer
radio, it doesn't hurt to add 30-40% expo
for the rudder setting.
|
 |
Taxi slowly for good
ground, throttle control is very important on the
ground!
