Teaching Tip From NAFI The next time you’re demonstrating a task, consider using the “whole-part-whole” method of organization. Start by demonstrating the whole skill in real time. Then, discuss, describe, and demonstrate each individual topic, step, or part of the skill. Finally, finish with a review or summary of the skill, along with a final demonstration. It’s a handy technique to use because it gives learners a preview of what to expect, it breaks the information into manageable steps, and it summarizes the material in a helpful closing. While it’s most familiar to us as the way to teach knowledge-based lessons (“tell them what you’ll tell them, tell them, tell them what you told them”), it’s also useful for teaching hands-on skills—and it helps you organize how you’re going to present information to your student in the most effective way possible.
